In the UK, electricity is produced in a competitive wholesale market, but the market is constrained by energy and environment policy and a great deal of regulation. Changes to public policy and to the rules set by regulators can have a big impact on the companies that have invested heavily in the industry or are planning to do so. Sometimes this can present companies with opportunities, but often it can be a threat to them.

The Association tries to ensure that the views of its members are appreciated and understood by key decision makers. It does this by maintaining good working relationships with stakeholders and by responding to the huge number of consultations undertaken by governments, regulators and other bodies.

From time to time, the Association itself draws attention to an issue that is likely to emerge or makes proposals for change in policy or the way that the market works.

The success that the Association enjoys is firmly founded on an understanding of what its members want. AEP members expect their association to be perceptive about the industry and the issues that affect it, to be influential and to enhance the industry’s reputation.

The Association’s views are often sought by the news media.
